Senior Thesis- First Semester Final Crit

Here is an image of all of the pieces together. They were set up for my final critique of my first semester of Senior Thesis. This class is meant to develop a self directed independant body of work. While making all of the pieces shown I saved all of the shavings that were created by carving the metals. As the work evolved I plan to incorporate the shavings into the installation.

This piece involved my second stainless steel plumb bob. It is also 303 stainless. The dimentions are 3inches in diameter and 4.5 inches long. It is attached to the ceiling at about 20 feet. The scale sits on a shelf but is meant to be hidden. The shelf is tig welded steel. The scale that is used is not the scale of choice but is what I had on hand, but it still gets the general message across. I think that a balance scale would be more ideal but as I look I'll see what scales are out there and how they work with the overall piece.

This piece involves both the ladder and the plumb bob. The plumb bob is made of 303 stainless steel and was carved on a lathe. It is hanging roughly 18 feet off the ground. The ladder is meant to aid in the perception of the bob; both when you climb the ladder and experience the hanging bob from differing levels and when you are on the ground and watching other people climb the ladder and enter into the space of the bob. At the widest spot the bob is 3 inches in diameter and is about 4.5 inches long.

This is a piece of 1018 carbon steel. The stock came has a hexagon and is about 2 inches wide. I carved the steel down using an end mill. All of the shavings were saved and displayed alongside the hex on a shelf that I also made. The shelf is tig welded carbon steel.

This is a piece of 3inch diameter aluminum. I left the bottom part unaltered and I carved the top on a lathe, creating a taper along with that ellipse shape where the carved portion meets the unaltered. It is 6061 Aluminum.

Wind Powered Wind Generator

This converts the energy that is captured by the top fins into the fan that is on the side. It is made of steel, nylon, plexiglas.

Camera Obscura

This is my version of a camera obscura. It is made out all poplar. The inside is lined with felt. The lens projects on a viewing screen which can slide forward if you need more room when crawling inside. The bench that is inside also folds up so that you can enter. 3' Tall x 4' Long x 2.5' Wide.

Steel Worker and Lunch

This is me wearing the costume and having lunch on some railroad tracks.

Steel Worker

This is a costume that I made for my Performance Garment class. I modeled it after a late 19th century steel worker. The pants are denim, the shirts are machine knitted; one is cotton and the other is rayon/flax. The suspenders are duck cloth and the buttons are red oak and the tensioners are steel.

Plumb Bob 2

Here is the second plumb bob that I have made. This one is made of stainless steel. It's about 3" in diameter and about 5" long. It weighs roughly 8lbs.

This plumb bob is made of carbon steel. It was made from a 2" diameter rod and is about 3" long.
The first image is of the metal before I finished it. It is still in the lathe which is what I used to make the bob.

Tube Thingy

I made this on a knitting machine with acrylic yarn.

Steel Box Project

This box was for my metal fabrication class. The project was to make a 6" box and then alter it. The bottom part of this is just a stand. The box comes out has a handle.
